Global venture investment reached $159 billion in the third quarter of 2026, according to Crunchbase data, spread across close to 6,000 funded startups. That is down 25% from the second quarter but up 53% year over year.
The headline number hides a quarter of extremes. A record 27 companies raised rounds of $1 billion or more, compared with 16 in Q2 and 14 in Q1. Eight companies raised $3 billion or more, including $5 billion rounds each for Databricks and Safe Superintelligence.
AI dominates
AI-focused startups raised $102 billion, or 64% of all venture dollars in the quarter. U.S.-based companies took $91 billion, roughly 57% of the global total.
Late-stage funding totaled $105 billion — down 23% from Q2 but up 73% from Q3 2025. Early-stage funding grew 25% year over year to $40.6 billion.
A record year so far
Year to date, private companies have raised $679 billion globally in the first three quarters of 2026, the highest amount for that period of any year on record.
Other trackers measure differently: KPMG's Venture Pulse put Q2 2026 at $227.4 billion versus Crunchbase's $212 billion, so figures from different sources shouldn't be compared directly.
