The space economy is no longer just the domain of billionaires and government agencies. A vibrant ecosystem of agile startups is providing orbital logistics, satellite servicing, and even in-space manufacturing.
With the cost to launch a kilogram into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) dropping exponentially over the last decade, the barrier to entry has finally lowered enough for seed-stage startups to participate.
In-Space Manufacturing
One of the most exciting sectors is microgravity manufacturing. Certain fiber optic cables, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors can be manufactured with far higher purity in the absence of gravity.
Startups are launching automated orbital factories the size of mini-fridges. They manufacture highly specialized, high-value materials in orbit and return them to Earth via reentry capsules.
Space Debris and Orbital Logistics
As LEO becomes crowded, traffic management and debris removal have become critical necessities. "Space tow trucks"—satellites designed to grapple with dead hardware and de-orbit it—are transitioning from sci-fi concepts to funded business models with government contracts.
The space economy is projected to reach $1 trillion by the early 2030s. The companies that will dominate this new frontier are currently working out of small warehouses, iterating rapidly, and looking toward the stars.
